Season Highlights
Opening Day of the 2007 season of the Newport International Polo
Series will feature USA against Egypt on Saturday, June 2 at 5:00
pm. Hailing from three of Egypt’s top polo clubs around Alexandria
and Cairo, the Egyptian team will stage their celebrated return to
the Polo Series since their debut appearance in 1994.
June will also feature Newport’s archrivals from Yale who will pay
their annual respects, and then the Scottish Polo Team will test
their latest strategy against USA, fielding another competitive team
anxious to avenge their first loss last season under increasing
pressure by USA.
The Newport International Polo Series runs continuously every
Saturday through the summer, with an international line-up that also
includes England, Ireland, France, Spain, Jamaica and South Africa, as
well as some teams closer to home.
In the spirit of freedom and democracy, Newport will host the
Independence Cup to commemorate our nation’s birthday and the
countless battles of our revolution that were fought throughout this
county.
In July, both
France and Ireland will challenge the home team in their continuing
series against USA. The Irish match on July 21st will be
followed by the Newport Polo Club’s annual asado lamb roast.
The first
weekend of August will provide a festive highlight of the summer
when the Spanish Polo Team are the celebrated guests at the
International Polo Ball ~ Olé Flamenco on Fri., Aug. 3rd
and featured in the tribute match on Sat. Aug. 4th in the
Polo Series against USA.
The match will be followed by the Newport Polo Club’s Lobsterbake.
The annual black-tie gala takes place at one of Newport’s famed
mansions, Astors Beechwood. Proceeds will benefit the Newport Polo
Education Foundation.
The Polo Series turns Sweet Sixteen this season, and is proud to
announce its loyal sponsors: the Carnegie Abbey Club, WCRB Classical
Radio New England, NBC-10, the Newport Daily News and Continental
Airlines.
“Our sponsors have been with us since the beginning. Without their
help the Series would not be as extensive as it is,” explained Dan
Keating, Polo Series founder.
The Series takes place on the
outskirts of Newport at historic Glen Farm in Portsmouth, where the
last 100 picturesque acres of what was once a 700-acre manorial farm
during the Gilded Age, are preserved today as an equine center and
recreational community property of the Town of Portsmouth. It is
located six miles north of downtown Newport on Route 138.
Tickets are available at the gate on the day of the match. Tailgate
picnics on the lawn are welcome with field-side admission of $10.00
for adults and children 15 & under are free. A limited number of
tickets are also available for tableside seating in the Carnegie
