USA Plays Scotland

June 23, 2007… Portsmouth ,, RI : ….USA fell short by a goal to Team Scotland on Saturday, June 23rd in the Newport International Polo Series.    With the 9-8 victory, Scotland ’s record against USA in the Polo Series is now 3-1, avenging last year's loss to USA.

Hailing from the historic Edinburgh Polo Club, the Scottish polo team was captained by Dietrich Zank, accompanied by polo club president Jamie Douglas, his daughter Gilli Douglas and Will Ramsay.

“The Scots were going for the hat-trick last year, but we applied extra focus to defeat them,” stated Dan Keating , captain of the USA team, after last year's victory over the Scots, "but this year we must have let our guard down."

USA put the first point onto the scoreboard in the opening chucker with a goal by Christer Still, taking the lead 1-0 at the end of the period.  In the second chukker, Scotland remained scoreless while USA's Still added the next three goals, followed by a a contribution from teammate & captain Dave Bullis who added a point to USA's total, 5-0.  Finally  Scotland came to life in the third chucker scoring unanswered goals, with a pair by Douglas and a goal by Ramsey, closing the gap 5-3.  The second half opened with both teams on the defensive for reasons of their own, but Douglas managed to slip one past USA, and Bullis was equally successful with a point for the home team, keeping things in balance 6-4.  The Scots let out a rally cry in the fifth chukker, with a pair of goals by Douglas to tie the score, but USA's Still answered with the go-ahead goal, until Ramsay tied it again, ending the period 7-7.   Electrified by their enormous comeback and the smell of victory, Scotland continued to hammer away away at USA in the sixth chucker with goals by Gilli Douglas and Dietrick Zank, while USA's only goal by Bullis was not enough to take the match into overtime,  handing the 9-8 victory to the euphoric Scots.

This year's match marked the fourth consecutive year that Scotland has participated in the Polo Series.  A following of Scottish fans from throughout the region has grown each year in attendance at the match, wearing kilts and waving 'the Saltire' cross in lively support of their fellow countrymen.
