Scotland to Defend its Last Victory

USA  vs. Scotland

June 19, 2010… Portsmouth, RI : ….Team USA will be prepared to face Scotland's best on Saturday, June 19th  in the Newport International Polo Series at 5pm.  

The Scottish polo team will make its seventh consecutive appearance in the Polo Series with a fresh reinforcement of players from Scotland' Jeff and Charlie Swanson & company.

“The Scots have brought a secret weapon each year, and we will be on our guard,” stated Dan Keating, captain of the USA team. 

A following of Scottish fans from throughout the region has grown each year in attendance at the match, wearing kilts and waving 'the Saltire' St. Andrews cross in lively support of their fellow countrymen.  

A weekly door prize raffle will be offered, courtesy of WCRB Classical Radio.  A trophy presentation will follow the match, with the presentation of the USA vs. Scotland silver revere bowl to the victorious team, and the Best Playing Pony blanket bestowed on the horse determined by the visiting team to have made the biggest difference in their contest against USA.  

Dating back more than 130 years, the polo matches are a unique and popular Newport summertime tradition enjoyed by the public.  Tickets are sold at the entry gates two hours prior to the start of each match.  General Admission for lawn or grandstand seating and tailgate picnics is $10.00 for adults; children 15 & under are free.  Box seating in the Subscribers Enclosure is also available for $15/person. Matches take place every Saturday in June – September at 5pm (4pm in September).  Special events in conjunction with the matches include the Newport Polo Club’s Asado Lamb Roast on July 18th, the International Polo Ball on July 31st to benefit the restoration of the Newport Opera House, a Lobsterbake on Aug. 1st, and a Jerk Grill on Aug.15th, in which the public is invited to partake.  For more information on the special events, contact the Polo Office: 401-847-7090.

The Polo Series takes place takes place on the polo grounds of historic Glen Farm, 715 East Main Road (also called Route 138) in Portsmouth , RI , just 6 miles north of downtown Newport. For more info about attending the matches or for season tickets, call 401-846-0200. 

Glen Farm is the remaining 100 acres of  a 700-acre manorial farm whose history dates back to the 1600's.  Its classical stone barns from the Gilded Age and its park-like grounds were rescued from ruins and rehabilitated by the Newport Polo Club's founder in the early 90's and, as a result, it thrives today as a vital equestrian and community recreational property and the jewel of Portsmouth.  Read about its fascinating history!
